Army Testing “New” Camo or Putting Lipstick on a Pig, You Decide?

092109_swatch_UCP_Delta_800According to an Army Times Article the Army is going to be testing a ” new” Camouflage they have called UCP Delta. Really “Delta”, REALLY? To call this camo “new” is a bit misleading since it appears by the image provided that all they’ve done is break out Photoshop an slapped Coyote Brown onto the pattern. To beat a cliche to death it’s like slapping lipstick on a pig, a big fat it’s 2 AM and I’m drunk in the bar so what the hell, pig.

It also appears they will be issuing Crye’s Multicam to a unit as part of the test as well which I am sure has all the MC fan boys happy.

On the up side the Army may be able to use Coyote Brown a a companion color for gear, which is already issued to the USMC and in the system. Multicam also has a large COTS base to draw from.

As a former soldier the UCP pattern pisses me off because it is utter garbage, as a taxpayer it pisses me off because now we are spending money to fix a problem that should have never come to be.

This camo fiasco is ridiculous. We now have the USMC with MARPAT (Woodland and Desert), The Air Force with Digital Tiger Stripe, Navy with their new pattern plus the companion patterns for when they are working with the Marine Corps. SOCOM with AOR 1 and 2 all the rivalry that goes with that mess not to mention the other off the shelf patterns they use. Then there is the Army with the abomination they adopted and are now trying to figure out how to fix.

Hey Branches how about this, get together, come up with a pattern, quit playing “we need to be different” and get this shit over with. Oh, and stop spending my tax money reinventing the wheel.

I definitely agree with all stated above. I have been in four years, and yes, am staying in another four, and the waste and abuse of the US government astounds me. I believe in tradition, and the independent identity of each service. But I also believe there is NO need for individual working uniforms. Dress uniforms? fine. be different, have pride, and have the attitude that you are better than whatever other service is out there. But as for fighting? Two tours in iraq have taught me one thing. UCP army only blends into one thing. American Concrete. But now with delta I guess it will blend into Brown Concrete. Good job.

And SPC miller? You can tell you are a Specialist. And not a Corporal, or real leader. You can always tell the difference in the army if someone is a leader at that rank. you probably just graduate college and picked up that rank right out of basic instead of earning it.

I was with the Marines but was in the Army later. This is common knowledge when the Marines adopted the MARPAT uniforms they didn’t blindly accept outright. They did some intensive study and consulting with the Canadians before making a decision to use a digital pattern when they realized the patterns were very effective, hence what we’re using the now. The fiasco with UCP indicates the Army leadership just decided to put a pattern together without any real testing and evaluation to determine if the pattern would work. This is why alot of soldiers are bitching about it and now they’re trying to pull out all the stops in developing a pattern that will work. Their current focus is trying to find a pattern that will work in Afgahnistan. What they need to do is find something that will work in all in environments. If there is one thing that most would agree on is the guys on the ground shouldn’t pay the price for the stupidity of the decisions made by individuals who probably never set foot in the field ever during their time uniform.

I have to say, being Canadian, it’s nice to be looked to for something, even if it is just our CADPAT.

How does everyone feel about the recent decision to switch to Multicam?

From what I was lead to believe it was just 173rd that was approved to use Multicam and some SF were already using it. But I don’t think the whole Army was approved for Multicam? I could be wrong? I’m hoping the whole Army goes Multicam, it’s what they should have went with in the first place and it would be great for business! But then I would be stuck with all this UCP crap…..
